Relatives of around a hundred elderly people who died in Madrid residences during the pandemic file a collective complaint with the public prosecutor’s office

The relatives of 115 elderly people who suffered from Covid without medical assistance and without transfer to hospitals during the months of March and April 2020 (out of the 7,291 who died without transfer during the first months of the pandemic) filed a complaint collectively with the public prosecutor’s office. Thursday from Madrid in which they recount the lack of assistance they suffered. In total, 111 people died.

The cases affect 72 residences in Madrid, the community where mortality was highest in centers for the elderly, because their transfer to hospitals was hampered by the so-called “protocols of shame” and they were practically not strengthened in terms of health, despite what the press release announced by the government of Isabel Díaz Ayuso at the start of the pandemic.

The collective complaint, filed and supported by Marea de Residencias and the Association 7291 Verdad y Justicia, urges the prosecutor’s office to study “the discrimination suffered by people who lived in residences during the first wave of the pandemic.”

This is a criminal accusation, since for its presentation it appeals to article 511 of the Penal Code and the plaintiffs understand that it has been violated, since there has been “a continuous crime of refusal of care health care for discriminatory reasons.”

Ramona is one of 115 relatives who showed up. “My mother died in Vitalia Griñón, she fell ill on March 5 and we were only able to take her out on April 3, but it was too late and she died. We’re going to report it and we’re going to go all the way,” she says, because before they could get her out, they underwent an ordeal: “We called the ambulance, 112, we argued with the director . of residence, because they only referred those who had private insurance, we found out that they were not referring patients… We will go as far as necessary.
