Reported for having animals in poor conditions in Mallorca

The Civil Guard reported two people for allegedly having unidentified livestock, dogs locked in dirty premises that do not comply with regulations and several marijuana plants on a farm in Ses Salines. The investigation was conducted on September 21, when officers inspected a rural plot in which they were aware of the possible existence of animal welfare law violations, as reported by the Armed Institute in a press release.

Once there, the officers observed “serious deficiencies” in terms of animal welfare, including 60 chickens, 15 dogs, four goats, two ferrets, two pigs and a horse.

Concerning the deficiencies, the goats were tied up, in violation of the regulations on production animals, since they cannot be tied up.

Half of the dogs did not have identification -electronic chip- or health cards and the rooms and beds did not meet regulatory requirements in terms of dimensions, isolation from the natural floor and cleanliness, because There was a lot of uncollected fecal matter.

The officials also did not have a zoo, which they were obliged to do because of the number of dogs they owned, nor did the ferrets have identification, which is also required by the animal protection law.

Likewise, goats, pigs and chickens were neither recorded in the livestock register nor identified in the case of goats and pigs.

It should be noted that the dogs walked on large accumulations of bones all day because the owners did not remove them when they were given meat, which caused injuries to their paws and pads.

Officers also observed an illegal marijuana plantation with approximately twenty plants, some of which were large, which were seized by officers. It is for this reason that the perpetrators were investigated for crimes against public health.

Those checked are also accused of various administrative offenses relating to waste, since abandoned vehicles were found on the ground without having been handed over to an authorized manager.

Finally, after receiving expert reports from a veterinarian, the agents assessed the “serious harm” to the health of domestic animals and therefore proceeded to investigate those responsible also as perpetrators of an alleged crime of animal abuse.

Based on Law 7/2023, those under investigation face serious sanctions, with fines of between 10,000 and 50,000 euros; and very serious, with fines of between 50,000 and 200,000 euros.
