Repsol suffers cyberattack that exposes data of its electricity and gas customers in Spain

New cybercriminal attack in Spain. Repsol has suffered a cyberattack on its electricity and gas customer database in Spain hosted by an external provider that has affected thousands of the company’s customers.

On September 10, the group detected partial access to the data of the country’s electricity and gas customers, following an incident suffered by one of its suppliers, as confirmed to this media by the company and advances Europe Press.

“The company immediately implemented measures to correct the incident and protect customers and reported this situation to the relevant authorities,” Repsol sources explain.

Compromised information does not include sensitive financial data (bank accounts, credit cards), passwords or electricity usage data. Affected data includes first and last name, identity, address, contact details and CUPS.

“Repsol regrets this situation and the inconvenience it may cause to affected customers, whom it has begun to proactively inform,” the oil company said.

Spain is suffering a wave of cyberattacks that have led to the theft of millions of people’s data. Five of the recent cyberattacks have targeted Ibex 35 strongholds, such as Iberdrola, Santander, Telefónica, Endesa and now Repsol.

Personal data has great value on the Internet and can be used for various purposes, such as scams or identity theft.

It is common to find hackers on dark web forums (accessible only through specialized web browsers) who claim to have stolen or extracted personal information from users of various companies and services, and who offer it to other cybercriminals in exchange for money.
