Rescue teams intensify searches south of El Hierro after distress call from drifting canoe

Maritime Rescue, members of the Canary Islands Government and the Red Cross have been searching since Monday evening by sea and air for a drifting canoe in an area located between the south and east of the island of Ironthe same where the shipwreck last Saturday, and during which around 60 people sailed.

This is what one of its occupants said in a distress call received this Monday at 8:11 p.m. on 1-1-2 and recorded on an antenna in the municipality of El Pinar.

After an initial search, carried out yesterday evening and until dawn by Salvamar Menkalinan and Helimer 201, proved unsuccessful, this Tuesday a new device was activated.

During the day of this Tuesday, the Guardamar search system Calliopethe patrol boat Río Ara, of the Civil Guard, and the rescue boat Hades, of the Red Cross.

By air, a helicopter from the Canarian Government Emergency and Rescue Group and the Sasemar 103 join us.

These searches are taking place along the same coastal strip where the sinking of another canoe took place on Saturday, and in which 54 people disappeared.

For the moment, no more bodies have been found than the nine found the night of the accident, three of which were buried this Monday at the El Mocanal cemetery.
