Research from the University Clinic of Navarre opens the door to curing chronic urticaria, an annoying disease

An investigation into Clinic of the University of Navarra opened the door to healing annoying illness of the chronic urticariathrough the use of Artificial intelligence.

THE chronic urticaria is a autoimmune disease of unknown origin affecting more than 300,000 people in Spain. Its effects, both dermatological and psychological, have a significant impact on the lives of patients and, despite advances in biological drugs, no definitive cure has yet been found. Faced with this situation, specialists around the world have focused their clinical and scientific efforts on the search for new treatments improving the management of this skin condition.

In this context, the Dr Marta Ferrerof the Department of Allergology of the University Clinic of Navarreparticipated in the inaugural session of the World Allergy Congress (WAC’24)organized by the World Society of Allergologyto present the first results of a study using the systems biology in the search for new therapeutic targets for the treatment of chronic urticaria.

During his speech at this international conference, held in PortugalTHE Dr Ferrerwho is also dean of Faculty of Medicine of the University of Navarrapresented the first results of a survey carried out in collaboration with the company Anaxomic Biotechnology. This study is based on the use of computer neural networks integrate biological, pharmacological and clinical data, in order to create mathematical models which identify new mechanisms of action and possible therapeutic targets.

THE Dr Ferrer explained that the clinical trials ongoing at the clinic focus on inhibiting cell signaling molecules and antibodies that act on the mast cell receptorsa key cell of the immune system involved in the activation of allergic reactions.

The specialist stressed that the results obtained “could help to better understand the therapeutic mechanisms of action of chronic urticaria and allow progress in the development of new treatments, always taking into account the patient profile As part of our strategy personalized medicine” declared the Dr Ferrer.

THE mathematical models showed that the two treatments directed against immunoglobulin E (anti-IgE) like the Bruton’s tyrosine kinase inhibitors They have a direct impact on the activation of immune cells. The first blocks the union of IgE to its receptor, while the second inhibits a key enzyme in this process, thus preventing the appearance of symptoms.

On the other hand, it has been confirmed that the treatments anti-interleukins And anti-Siglec-8which block different proteins, do not act on mast cells, but rather affect other aspects of the system immune systemmore precisely the adaptive immunitywhich responds more specifically and more slowly to infections and allergies.
