Reservoirs in the Mediterranean basin increase their reserves by 35% in three weeks

The two advanced atmospheric depressions (DANA) that crossed Andalusia in just three weeks marked a turning point for the reservoirs of the autonomous zone in a more critical situation due to drought. For the first time, the demarcation of the Mediterranean basins (which supply the provinces of Malaga, Almería and part of the Strait of Gibraltar) exceeds last year’s levels: They increased their reserves by 35% in three weeks by gaining 90 cubic hectometers and be around 30% of its capacity. Last year, on this same date, they had 100 cubic hectometers less.

The improvement is particularly significant in the case of the province of Malaga, where most of the increase in dam waters is concentrated, with an additional 66 cubic hectometers to reach 168. At the other extreme, The province of Almería remains in a particularly critical situation: The reservoirs have barely increased and continue with 25 cubic hectometers, which represents 11% of the total.

The other neighborhoods also benefited from water, although in this case the situation, given the seriousness of the situation, had already improved in recent months: the Guadalquivir Confederation reaches 35% with 224 additional cubic hectometers, while the Guadalete Barbate basin is already at 28% with 463 cubic hectometers. The data from Tinto-Odiel-Piedras (Huelva) has not yet been updated after the rains which stopped on Friday.

Normal

Regarding damage to public spaces, businesses, premises, homes or crops due to the second DANA, The Junta de Andalucía and the central government are still analyzing the incidents and quantifying the costs. At the same time, as the Minister of the Presidency of the Junta de Andalucía pointed out, the works continue and it is expected that “practically normality” will be restored in the areas affected by the rains “at the beginning of this week”.

“Problems with energy, electricity or water supply have been addressed and resolved and complex situations are fewer. We will practically take normality for granted at the start of the week“, explained the advisor in an interview on Cadena SER.
