Response from Aitor Esteban to Miguel Tellado on behalf of Venezuela

“Clumsy, you are clumsy.” This is how the parliamentary spokesman of the PNV, Aitor Esteban, responded on Twitter to his counterpart of the PP, Miguel Tellado, after the confrontation that the two parties organized this Tuesday in the Permanent Deputation of the Congress due to the appearances of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, to explain Spain’s position on the situation in Venezuela.

The PP had requested the urgent appearance of the two, but the parliamentary majority rejected it. During the debate, Tellado attacked the PNV, which questioned his support for the Venezuelan opposition to the government of Nicolas Maduro. The PP spokesman assured in one of his interventions that “the voters” of the PNV will not understand the position of his party.

This Tuesday, MP Mikel Legarda acted as the PNV’s spokesperson. But Aitor Esteban chose to intervene remotely, and responded to a message from the PP on the social network: “You don’t care about Venezuela. You are simply using it to break the government’s blockade. Maduro is a dictator but your request to appear does not achieve anything. If, with tweets like this, you want to get the PNV’s vote in the future… Clumsy, you are clumsy.”

The PP and the PNV, regular partners in recent decades, have broken off relations since in 2018 the Basques supported the motion of censure against Mariano Rajoy who supported Pedro Sánchez. In this legislature, Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s attacks on the nationalist party are becoming more and more explicitwith the undisclosed intention of trying to attract traditional PNV voters who were angry with their party for its support for the PSOE.

This transfer of votes, for now, has not taken place. Neither in the general elections of July 2023 nor in the last Basque elections, in which the PP remained the penultimate party while the PNV kept the Lehendakaritza in coalition with the PSOE.
