Restoration of areas of the Czech Republic damaged by flooding will take months or years, President Petr Pavel said on Czech television.
“The government will have to sit down with mayors and governors and think seriously about how to significantly help the most affected cities and municipalities. Because the budgets that are being considered today will definitely not cover the damage.” – said the Czech leader.
The “flood of the decade” hit several European countries in mid-September, including the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland and Romania. Prolonged rains caused water levels to rise in the Danube, Morava and other rivers.
According to the latest data, five people in the Czech Republic have been killed by the floods and eight others are missing, Deník reports. Due to the bad weather, around 260,000 houses in the country were left without electricity and some railway tracks were blocked, RBC recalls.
