On the third day of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, another event took place in the Green Zone.
Oku.Az reports that Rob Miller, director of the Aviation Impact Accelerator at the University of Cambridge, gave a speech at the event called “Aviation Impact Accelerator and Leap Energy.”
He said that currently 10 percent of the world’s population uses air transport, but this figure is expected to increase as incomes increase: “One of the problems that await the world until 2050 will be related to the negative effects of the sector of aviation on climate.
Rob Miller noted that aviation’s impact on the climate is not just CO2 but not limited to:
“Persistent contrails created by aircraft contribute significantly to the climate warming impact of aviation. The warming they cause at current traffic levels is 33 billion tons of CO2 equivalent, which is around 16% of the remaining 1.5 degree carbon budget of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change).
Rob Miller added that outside of the aviation industry and policy circles, options for reducing global carbon emissions related to investment footprints and selectively avoiding investment footprints are limited.
