To provide security at President-elect Donald Trump’s private Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, the Secret Service is using robotic canine security guards developed by Boston Dynamics. These devices, known as Spots, became part of the security force after the agency decided to improve its security practices.
The BBC reports this.
Secret Service officials did not specify when exactly they began using the robots, citing the importance of ensuring the safety of the newly elected president. However, experts say Trump’s two assassination attempts have increased the need for advanced technology to improve threat monitoring.
Robotic dogs are capable of close surveillance of large areas like Mar-a-Lago and are more effective at patrolling than humans. The first attack on Trump occurred in July at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and the second in September near his villa’s golf course.
Ron Williams, a former Secret Service agent, noted that robots like Spot are becoming increasingly popular in military and law enforcement agencies around the world. For example, in Pennsylvania they are used to test explosive devices and in Ukraine for reconnaissance.
These robots are equipped with high-tech sensors, including cameras to create 3D maps of the area and thermal sensors. They are very maneuverable, capable of climbing stairs, small spaces and even opening doors. They can be controlled remotely and can also operate autonomously, following pre-programmed routes.
Unlike real humans or dogs, robots are not distracted by external stimuli such as sounds or smells. Although Mar-a-Lago used an unarmed robot, some companies are developing more sophisticated models, including armed versions.
