At least eight people died on Friday the 1stAhem November, after part of the exterior roof collapsed at a train station in Novi Sad, northern Serbia, according to Interior Minister Ivica Dacic. Rescue operations continue to find missing people.
“Eight bodies were found, eight people died… Two people are in the hospital, one in critical condition”Dacic told reporters. “The rescue operation continues and is proving extremely complicated. More than 80 lifeguards are mobilized »he added. According to the minister, rescuers are in contact with two people trapped in the rubble.
Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic, for his part, promised an investigation into the causes of the accident. “We will insist on finding those responsible, those who should have guaranteed the safety of the structure. “My deepest condolences to the families of the deceased.”declared, adding: “It is a black Friday for us, for all of Serbia and for Novi Sad”.
Videos posted on social media show several ambulances, a fire truck and excavators in front of the train station.
Novi Sad station reopened in July after three years of renovation. Work was still underway in some parts of the station. The Serbian Railways company, however, clarified that the exterior roof that collapsed was not part of the renovations carried out at the station.
