Rospotrebnadzor chief speaks about monkeypox in Russia

Russia has its own modern vaccine against monkeypox, but there is no need to use it yet, Rospotrebnadzor head Anna Popova told Izvestia on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).

According to her, there is no risk of monkeypox spreading in Russia at the moment. In Africa, the situation remains difficult, but the Russian Federation is taking measures to combat the spread of the disease.

“In 2022, when this was first described, we created our own monotest system for monkeypox. It is available in all our branches in the country, stocks are maintained and diagnostics are carried out if necessary. The algorithms work.” – he explained.

During the entire period, only three imported cases were identified in Russia. The infected were quickly identified and the spread was not allowed.

“We have a vaccine against monkeypox. Vector has developed an excellent fourth-generation vaccine, the effectiveness of which has been proven in an interdepartmental study. But we do not plan to vaccinate anyone today. Only depending on the situation. But we do not have a situation that requires this.” – Popova stressed.

The situation in Russia remains safe from coronavirus. Popova noted that one of the most important tasks is to learn from the past pandemic. Currently, the Russian Federation is working on various ways to counter the infection, taking into account what is already known about the coronavirus.

“We have a full range of modern tools to monitor, analyse and predict the development of the epidemiological situation: genomic surveillance of microorganisms, immunological surveillance in the population, digital analytical platforms and modern and equipped reference centres throughout the country.” – said Popova.
