“We are facing a global climate threat, hurricanes have become extreme and in some cases, level 4-5 “emergency” warnings have been announced. Hurricanes are destroying small islands.”
Oku.Az This was expressed by Rueanna Haynes, head of the climate diplomacy team of the President of the Alliance of Small Island States, at the panel on “Climate Justice and Equality” held within the framework of COP29.
Rueanna Haynes emphasized that it is necessary to strengthen the infrastructure of small islands and this requires financial support:
“We need to evacuate people in time, but for this it is necessary to allocate financial resources. Limited funds are allocated to island countries. It is necessary to compensate for losses and damages. Serious financial support is needed to restore these devastations. Natural disasters “They destroy schools, hospitals, roads. Each of them requires funds to restore.”
Another speaker on the panel, Adele Thomas, vice-chair of Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), addressed the damage caused by climate change to agriculture and people working in this field.
“The consequences of the crisis caused by a natural disaster seriously harm agriculture and the people who work in this sector. We can take as an example the fishermen of small island countries. Thus, fish migrate due to climate change. This makes that fishermen lose their income and also the price. That is why it is important to implement projects to help the fishing industry.
