Russia and Iran to sign strategic partnership agreement

During the meeting, he approved the proposal of the Russian Foreign Ministry to conclude a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement with Iran. The Kremlin leader also gave permission to make minor changes to the draft agreement.

Russian propaganda media reported on this event late in the evening of the same day. Putin stressed the importance of signing this agreement at the “highest level”, underlining its strategic importance for both sides.

In July 2024, Iran expressed its readiness to sign the agreement, as stated by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkiyan during a telephone conversation with Putin. The Iranian side proposed to carry out the signing at the BRICS summit, which will be held in Kazan at the end of October.

On September 17, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu arrived in Tehran on an unannounced visit. The meeting with his Iranian counterpart was devoted to a discussion of the agreements reached and issues of cooperation between the two countries. Shoigu confirmed Russia’s support for Iran’s policy on transport corridors and routes with Azerbaijan.

He also met with the Iranian president, during which he conveyed a personal message from Putin to Pezeshkiyan.
