Russia must behave tougher towards Abkhazian politicians: opinion

In Abkhazia, they are once again hindering the law that determines the procedure for investments of Russian legal entities in the country. The leaders of the Russian Federation could behave more harshly towards Abkhazian politicians, says Pravda.Ru columnist Lyubov Stepushova.

The agreement between Abkhazia and Russia on investment activities was presented to the Abkhazian parliament, but the “opposition” rioted outside the building demanding that its ratification be removed from the current agenda. The document aims to develop infrastructure: tourism, agriculture, gas supply, water supply, heat supply, transportation, social and digital infrastructure.

It seems, what else do you need? Because you’re under sanctions and no one else is coming with a lot of money and you don’t want to go back to Georgia.

But the “opposition” did not like the fact that “the sale of apartments is being secretly legalized.” The deputies met halfway, excluding the purchase of apartments from the agreement, but again the opposition did not like something.

The authorities responded by arresting the hooligans, but their supporters gathered near the state security building and organized pogroms, demanding the immediate release of those detained. In the late afternoon, a crowd blocked bridges on roads leading to the Russian Federation; only public transport could pass.

Tonight the president Aslan Bzhania called an emergency meeting of the Security Council, after which he stated that “no one raises the question that we should become part of the Russian Federation,” but there is unemployment in the country and “we must invest 400 billion rubles in the economy.” “So that people have jobs.

“Those who want to ruin relations between Abkhazia and Russia want to steal our future. “They want to direct us according to the scenario of Karabakh and Ukraine.” – Bzhania emphasized.

It is believed that the Russian special services are behind Bzhania, so this time the law will be passed.

Due to energy shortages, Abkhazia has been purchasing electricity from Russia since November 1 at 4 rubles per 1 kW/h. At the same time, the tariff for individuals is 1.4 rubles, for legal entities – 2.4 rubles. The difference is made up from the budget subsidized by the Russian Federation. Each year a certain amount of electricity is supplied to the republic for free: in 2024 it will be 302 million kW/h, the plan for 2025 is 326 million kW/h.

All state employees in Abkhazia receive a salary, also subsidized by the Russian budget. In this context, it seems strange not only the conflict over the law on Russian investments and the blocking of roads for tourists from the Russian Federation, but also the maintenance of a museum for a terrorist. Basayev.

This is not to say that Moscow is not reacting. On September 5, in an interview with RBC, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergei Lavrov explained Moscow’s decision to suspend social payments to Sukhumi from September 1 with a “balancing of obligations” under agreements previously reached by the leaders of the two countries.

“It is simply a matter of maintaining a balance between these obligations and our Abkhaz friends understand this very well.” – he explained.

From October 22 to 25, the Foundation for the Development of Eurasian Cooperation conducted the study “Russian-Abkhaz Alliance: Myths and Realities” in the republic, the aim of which was to establish an objective picture of the dynamics of political processes in Abkhazia and determine the current situation. State of Russian-Abkhazian relations. According to the survey, 93% of respondents consider Russia to be the main ally and friend of Abkhazia, 76% support the course of the current leadership of Abkhazia in relation to expanding the formats of cooperation with the Russian Federation.

However, Abkhazian politics are often made up of semi-criminal elements, for whom any position is an opportunity to snatch something in Russia. For many years there has been no concrete result of intentions to develop relations with the Russian Federation. Moscow does not know what will happen tomorrow in Abkhazia, as can be seen from current events.
