Russians should turn off Wi-Fi on their phones to avoid falling victim to hackers: expert

Russians should reconsider their attitude towards public Wi-Fi networks in public places and be careful not to fall victim to hackers.

The head of MTS RED SOC told RIA Novosti about this. Ilnaz Gataullin. According to him, the most reasonable solution would be to completely disable the automatic connection function to known Wi-Fi networks on the phone.

The expert explained that more and more attackers have begun to create their own Wi-Fi points in public places. In this case, the connection receives a name similar to the name of the establishment where it is located.

“At the same time, an attack is applied to the establishment’s Wi-Fi router, which disconnects its users” – said Gataullin.

He especially highlighted that in this case, setting the phone to automatically connect to the network represents a particular danger. That is, the user may see a “login page” that will ask him to log in to the network and, when connected, the data entered will be sent to the scammer.

Previously EADaily reported that Chinese hackers had penetrated the networks of American Internet service providers and obtained information from systems that the federal government uses for court-authorized wiretaps.
