Sahrawi activists detained in Barajas begin hunger strike to protest living conditions

Sahrawi activists detained at Barajas airport for several weeks have begun a hunger strike to denounce ‘unhealthy’ conditions in which they remain and ask the Spanish government to fulfill its “duty” of political asylum and grant them freedom.

This was confirmed by Fátima Fadel, lawyer of some of these people, who clarified that the protest began last Saturday and that it is supported by 29 activists among the “over 30” who are in Barajas, all men distributed between terminals 1 and 4.

For their part, sources from the Ministry of the Interior reported that at noon this Sunday there is no official communication to the police authorities in Barajas that there are no Sahrawis on hunger strike.

Last Saturday, around twenty demonstrators, including many relatives of the thirty or so Sahrawi activists detained at Barajas airport, demanded in front of the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior, his freedom and the granting of asylum in Spain, and denounced the “inhumane” conditions in which, they say, they live there today.

These people denounced, They are “political prisoners” persecuted by Morocco for his activist work. Fadel assures that the situation is “extremely serious.” “There are bedbugs, we see their bodies with traces of bites. They complain of eating the same food for 20 days. The hygienic situation is terrible, to which is now added the hunger strike… They do not see the sun, they are practically prisoners, these conditions are like a prison,” he says.

At the same time, the lawyer pointed out that there were “seven people” out of the 30 detainees who had flights scheduled to leave Spain for Morocco, to cities such as Casablanca or Rabat, which would lead, she predicted, his imprisonment for his activist work“The evidence or the story they are reporting is not being evaluated,” the lawyer lamented.
