Sales of the latest iPhone 16 smartphones have been blocked in Indonesia

Indonesia has blocked sales of the latest iPhone 16 smartphones as US company Apple Inc. failed to meet its investment obligations. The Wall Street Journal reports this.

It should be noted that the ban does not apply to other Apple products.

The company’s local unit, PT Apple Indonesia, “failed to meet its investment obligations,” Indonesia’s Industry Ministry said in a statement.

“The Industry Ministry said that to obtain a license to sell its latest smartphones, the American company had to invest 1.7 trillion Indonesian rupiah ($109 million) in its operations in the country, but so far the investment has only has amounted to 1.5 billion ($95 million). Furthermore, the company did not fulfill its obligations to localize production: the share of local components in smartphones and tablets should not be less than 40%.” – writes Kommersant.

It should be noted that this ban does not affect sales of previous iPhone models.
