This Monday, Pedro Sánchez called for the creation of a global wealth tax during his speech at the G20 summit being held in Brazil. Like the host president, Lula da Silva, the president of the Spanish government demanded concrete measures to combat tax evasion and fraud. “We must promote measures such as a global tax on the wealth of large fortunes, as you propose and which we defend together, President Lula,” he stressed.

During his speech at the first working session dedicated to “social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty”, Sánchez also announced that he would provide 400 million euros to the International Development Association ( IDA) to finance development projects. “There is no other cause more important or more urgent,” declared the chief executive in front of the rest of the leaders.

The president clarified that Spain is ready to lead by example and commit 400 million euros to the next replenishment of the International Development Association. A figure which, according to Moncloa, represents an increase of almost 40% compared to the previous replacement. Sánchez asked the rest of the leaders to increase their “ambition” to guarantee an adequate international financial architecture.
