After the fourth meeting of the crisis committee, almost five days after the tragedy, Pedro Sanchez appeared to announce that the State would double its aid to the Valencian Community in an attempt to alleviate the emergency situation that this region is going through. The president, who has already recognized it there are at least 211 deadsaid the army would deploy 5,000 additional troops, adding to those already on the ground, and would also send 5,000 additional police and civil guards to try to restore security to the area.
“The scale of this disaster makes these figures insufficient. We know that aid takes a long time to arrive and that there are many defenseless people, which is why I am happy that President Mazón has decided to increase the request for military personnel from 500 to 5,000 and I announce that the Spanish Government will immediately proceed with this shipment”, he said. Sánchez, who urged the President of the Valencian Community to “ask for more aid, if they need it”.
The meeting was attended by the First Vice President and Minister of Finance, Maria Jesus Montero; the second vice-president and minister of labor, Yolanda Diaz; the third vice-president and minister of ecological transition, Therese Riberaand the heads of Defense, Marguerite Robles; Presidency and Justice, Felix Bolanos; Transportation, Oscar Puenteand territorial policy, Angel Victor Torres. Additionally, the Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant, was also present electronically.
After his intervention, Sánchez headed towards the Headquarters of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) with the Minister of Defense, where she will hold a working meeting with her officials, at the Torrejón Air Base.
