Although Moncloa advised against it, aware of the tensions and unrest that existed due to the delay in the arrival of aid, King Felipe VI wanted to visit this Sunday several of the most affected towns in the province of Valencia by the DANA floods.
But from the start of the tour, some neighbors and volunteers who were working to clean the streets of Paiporta greeted the official delegation with shouts and throwing mud balls.
Advised by his security team, President Pedro Sánchez hastily left the procession, protected by his bodyguards, who covered him with three umbrellas to avoid thrown objects.
Instead, King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia and the President of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, continued to walk the city streets, covered in mud. The kings listened to the complaints of neighbors and tried to bring them understanding and comfort, in one of the most difficult days of their reign.
The video recorded by an individual shows the tense dialogue that the kings (with Doña Letizia very affected by the situation and Felipe VI showing great serenity) had with several inhabitants of the city.
A woman addresses the Queen: Letizia, Mrs. Letizia, it’s not your fault, but it wasn’t the day to come and take a photo, you didn’t have to come.
Then he addresses the King: There should be direct layoffs, we do not want resignations, we want direct layoffs (he said in reference to policies).
A man: This government must go.
Philip VI: But it’s a democracy…
He answers: If the people do not take to the streets, the government will not leave.
Another man: This doesn’t really look like a democracy anymore, Your Majesty.
Philip VI: Not everything you perceive is right… You have to warn, of course, but it goes beyond anything you imagine.
The same man: Of course, this is beyond it, but we should be better prepared in a country like Spain. Because it’s not the holidays that we miss, but the emergency services…
Philip VI: Despite this, look at the means available, we help as much as possible.
Another man: All these people around you should remove the mud, not here, they don’t matter here.
Philip VI: We help as much as possible.
Another man: You must understand that you are blocking the traffic of all trucks. We have been here for two hours for you and for those who have already left.
A third: And 200 without doing anything. And for those who left.
Philip VI: Everything is balanced, if you want I won’t come, I will stay in Madrid.
The third: And why did those who were supposed to be here leave?
The second man: These should not have come, you should have done it (apparently you are referring to President Pedro Sánchez and his team).
Philip VI: Do you know why? Because prudence also wants that… (they interrupt him). Relief is normal and should be understood, but it can become unmanageable.

The third: But they left because they arrived five days later, if they had come the first day and had their boots on, people would have supported them.
Another man: There’s dead people out there, man, who couldn’t get them out because the emergency services didn’t come when they should have.
At another point during the tour, a woman approached the heartbroken Queen Letizia, shouting: “They didn’t warn us, that’s why it happened. many deathsa lot of deaths…”
Queen Letizia, visibly moved, hugged the woman and said: “Yes, you are right, you are right. I’m sorry, I’m sorry“.

Meanwhile, a young man kept shouting at the queen: “Little shame to come here, scoundrels, bastards!”
By then, President Pedro Sánchez had long left the Kings and Carlos Mazón alone. The neighbors had hit, kicked and punched one of the vehicles of Sánchez’s official delegation.
Before leaving Paiporta, another man approached Letizia to let her know that the neighbors’ indignation was not against the kings, but was due to the presence of the politicians: “It’s not for you, it’s not for you, lady“, he repeated.
The queen then collapses and begins to cry, her face covered in mud. One of his companions showed a bleeding wound on his forehead after being hit by a stone.
King Felipe VI was understanding towards the neighbors who had expressed their discomfort and ended up hugging two young people. It was one of the most moving images of the visit.
Before leaving the city, getting into his vehicle, he made a gesture by clasping his hands: he asked for forgiveness from the citizens who, in one of the areas most affected by DANA, believe that the State has let them to fall.
