Sánchez joins the proposal for a global tax on the rich

The president of the government, Pedro Sánchez, has just joined the creation of a global wealth tax, which would consist of charging the 3,000 richest people in the world 2% of this annual wealth, supposed to bring in between 200,000 and $250,000 million.

This proposal is based on the report prepared by economist Gabriel Zuzman and which was presented by the G20 itself last June.

The proposal was signed by several former presidents such as Felipe González or José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, and has as its patron the President of Brazil, Lula da Silva.

Sánchez made these statements from Rio de Janeiro in his speech during the first working session dedicated to “Social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty”. “There is no other more important or more urgent cause,” declared the head of the Executive in front of the rest of the leaders.

Regarding the wealth tax, he stressed that it was necessary to promote actions that improve access to capital in developing countries that need it, and for this purpose he used the creation of this global wealth tax. richest in the world.

Concretely, Sánchez believes that a “global tax on the wealth of large fortunes” would be used to finance various aid programs for countries that request it. The leader of the Executive insists that this would also serve to fight against tax evasion.

An “irrecoverable” tax

Financial and legal sources consulted by OKDIARIO assure that the creation of this tax is “little more than a utopia”, given the ability of these fortunes to settle in countries “where they would not have to pay it.”

Creating a global tax is impossible, while many countries benefit from exactly the opposite, that is, they make it easier for companies and taxpayers to avoid taxes. “The case of Ireland, they tell us, is one of the most striking because, without being a tax haven, it makes tax reduction a model of growth for its partners.”

Something similar would happen if a global tax were implemented, because even though it is called that, the truth is that “it would only have the scope of those countries that signed the tax itself “.

The “Zucman Report”

Economist Gabriel Zucman’s proposal consists of collecting 2% of the wealth of the richest people on the planet annually. This would be the global tax.

Zucman calculates that if an annual tax of 2% of wealth were applied to the world’s richest 3,000 people, those with assets greater than $1 billion, it would raise between $200,000 and $250,000 million per year .

Zucman’s proposal attempts to provide a solution to another of the big debates that arose after the pandemic, which concerned the creation of a minimum corporate tax rate for large multinational companies.

in line with another debate that took place at the G20 after the pandemic: the objective of creating a minimum tax of 15% on corporate profits to ensure the income of multinationals. In other words, in every country in the world there is a tax that requires paying at least 15% of the annual profits of all multinationals.
