Sánchez threatens to withdraw 44 million from the Balearic Islands for housing policy if state law is not applied

The government of Pedro Sánchez threatens to withdraw 44.2 million from the Balearic Islands for regional housing policies, if the government of Marga Prohens does not apply state law, as demanded by the Socialist Minister of Housing and the Urban Agenda. Isabel Rodriguez.

If last week the Socialist Executive launched a wide-ranging threat to autonomous communities reluctant to apply the housing law in what they are not obliged to do (such as declaring stressed areas to limit the price of rents) and warned them that they would not benefit from financing the State for their housing policies, at the moment, and in the face of a central government in permanent attack against the administrations governed by the PP, the suspicions within the government that Sánchez will move from words to actionit’s more than real.

The state funding that the Balearic Government receives in housing through various plans and programs amounts to 44.2 million, given that the State finances between 70 and 75% of regional housing policies.

More precisely, in the case of the Islands, the national housing plan (2022-2026) In total, 34.6 million have been committed. He is considering different programs, such as rental assistance or actions in the social housing stock.

For the annual appeal of rental assistance, the ministry of Isabel Rodríguez provides 6.5 million per year. Negotiations on the new National Housing Plan for the period 2027-2030 are now beginning.

To this we must add the bonus Youth Rental 2022-23 who has a contribution of state funds of 9.6 million.

This program spanned the last two years and will end next December, although the government demanded that it be maintained for 2024 and 2025. The ministry announced that it would approve it for this year, which he hasn’t done it yet. October and the last quarter of the year have already started, although regional sources indicate that “we hope it will be effective.”

Until now, this aid was 100% financed by the ministry, although it was granted when the Balearic Islands were governed by the previous government chaired by the socialist, Francine Armengol.

This call for the Young Rental Bonus for 2022 and 2023 allowed its beneficiaries, a total of 1,400 young people under the age of 35, to receive aid of 250 euros per month provided they present supporting documents for each quarter.

However, the room for improvement in its budgetary allocation is wide if we take into account that in 2022, the previous government left out one in three young people who requested it, due to lack of budget.

Out of a total of 2,555 young people who processed the application to benefit from these subsidies, only 1,600 were helped after the evaluation process, so that 955 remained without a response and could not access their payment. Sánchez now threatens to leave all these young people from the Balearic Islands without a euro help.

In addition to state funds, the Balearic Government receives Next Generation funds from the EU which are distributed by the Ministry of Housing, although this is not state funding. More precisely, this is the program of European funds for the rehabilitation of housing and buildings, with a total budget of 73 million. In this case, the blocking of these contributions does not seem to be relevant.

This is not the case of the 44.2 million who depend on the political will and commitment to the Balearic Islands of the socialist tandem Sánchez-Armengol, and even more so if the condition for receiving them is to comply with a law national on housing which the minister has already indicated. Jose Luis Mateothat “we will not apply what we already know fails.”

The Minister of Housing has always shown himself willing to collaborate with the Government, but he has already warned in a press release that he will not tolerate the Government not respecting the margin of autonomy of the autonomous communities to apply or not the measures included in the law, since “The limitation of rents is not an obligation, but a possibility available to the Balearic Islands” like other communities governed by socialists, such as Asturias and Castile-La Mancha, which do not have it do not apply either.
