Sanchez’s visit to China marked by debate over tariffs amid threat of trade war with Europe

Pedro Sanchez He will take his photo again with Chinese President Xi Jinping on his second trip to the Asian giant in less than two years. As in March 2023, he will be accompanied by Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares. The main objective is to help ease tensions between Europe and China to avoid a tariff war that could result in sanctions on Spanish pork, which would be very bad news because we are one of the main exporters.

Last year we sent more than 560,000 tons of porkThis is Beijing’s response to the customs tariffs imposed by Brussels on its electric cars to avoid saturation of the European market.

EU dairy products are also under the surveillance of Asian governments, which could fill our market with European surpluses. Asaja Asturias president Ramón Artime explains that these surpluses end up occupying “an important space in the Spanish market“.

Other issues will also be on the table, such as the role China can play as mediator in the war between Russia and UkraineSo far, he has been equally distant and close to Vladimir Putin’s government, which has aroused suspicion in the West.
