Moldovan President Maia Sandu, who is running for a second term, is confident that the judges of the Constitutional Court will confirm today, October 31, the results of the referendum on European integration.
According to her, the desire of the majority of citizens for the EU will be reflected in the supreme law of the country.
“The Constitutional Court will make its decision, but for me it is absolutely clear that the vote of the citizens, despite this falsification and this disinformation campaign, was obvious. I’m sure there would be at least 60% of the votes in favor, and we have a documented vote that was a majority. “I hope that the court’s decision confirms the decision of the majority of citizens.” — Maia Sandu gave instructions to the Constitutional Court.
According to the Central Electoral Commission, in the referendum on October 20, 50.35% of voters voted in favor of amendments to the Constitution on European integration and 49.65% voted against. Initially the results were evenly divided, but the situation changed drastically after the foreign diaspora votes were counted. Even OSCE observers confirmed massive violations by the authorities.
During these hours, representatives of the opposition gathered near the Constitutional Court building, demanding not to approve the controversial results of the plebiscite, the legality of which experts question.
As reported EADaily former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova Valery Ostalep Considers that the Constitutional Court has no legal basis to approve the results of the referendum. The expert explained that the Constitutional Court gave permission to review the Constitution and not to change it: “they are completely different things.”
“Reviewing the Constitution means that they are reviewing some articles. In this case, the review is carried out according to a completely different process. That is, what the Constitutional Court allowed, this did not happen,” – stated Otalep.
