Scientists’ statement on the stereotype “a drunk tells the truth.”

Contrary to what many people think, alcohol does not make people more honest and sincere.

Oku.AzAccording to information provided by scientists from the US National Institute of Research on Alcohol and Alcoholism, they published the results of their research on the “Live Science” portal.

According to scientists, drinking alcohol leads to extroversion – more active and free social behaviour. This is because alcohol slows down the brain.

“People who are alcoholic are more likely to act on their impulses without thinking. This is because alcohol suppresses signals in the prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain that regulates behavior and controls emotional impulses. In addition, alcohol also affects a structure in the brain known to create feelings of fear and anxiety; it also puts the amygdala to sleep. When a person is awake, the amygdala usually sends out warning signals that can stop the person from saying or doing something that could put them in a bad situation,” they explained.

According to the scientists, despite the known effects, during the experiments no evidence was found that alcohol forces people to tell the truth when they do not want to. They said that alcohol makes people more communicative and prone to emotional expressions, which those around them perceive as a stream of sincere thoughts.
