Environmental science and technology indicate that, according to scientists, 78 percent of water sample in the region contain uranium with a higher concentration than a safe level, and in some areas this number reaches 75 times.
Scientists were able to use advanced methods of analysis of an isotope to track uranium migration in groundwater layers. It turns out that in conditions of oxidation, where oxygen, uranium easily melts and moves with water, while in zones that are free from oxygen in the form of solid compounds.
“Our study exceeds the simple detection of pollution. We were able to understand the mechanisms that determine the behavior of uranium in the ground environment, which is crucial for protecting the health of millions of people, ”says Arekhatt Mitra, the main researcher.
According to experts, water consumption containing a high level of uranium can lead to severe damage to the kidneys, liver and structural system. That is, 25 million people in Karnataku are exposed to these damage.
Scientists note that these results open new horizons to solve the problem. They suggest compliance with geological conditions when digging new wells, introduce current treatment systems in the most polluted areas and create a comprehensive water control system. These procedures can be applied in any region of the world that is faced with a similar problem.
