Seismicity map of the Kuznetsk coalfield was created

Scientists of the Institute of Mining of the Ural Section of the Russian Academy of Sciences have created a database on natural and man-made seismicity in the Kuznetsk coal basin. As a result, a “dispersion” of observation points in Kuzbass and Altai was revealed at a speed of up to 2.6 cm per year, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation reported.

The authors of the study claim that the movement of large volumes of natural resources – up to 400 million cubic meters. m of rock mass annually – changes the geological environment in the Kuznetsk coal basin, disrupts the stability and equilibrium state of the subsoil. This caused an increase in seismic activity in the region. The created database will help existing mining companies in Kuzbass and Altai to ensure the safety of complex industrial infrastructure facilities.

“The database contains data on the speeds of modern geodynamic movements in Kuzbass and Altai: the name of the station and its coordinates, the monitoring period (number of series and total duration), the magnitude of modern geodynamic movements at along the coordinate axes (latitude, longitude, altitude). The data were determined on the basis of experimental studies of patterns of changes over time in the spatial coordinates of special monitoring stations in the region.” — indicated the ministry, reports TASS.

The researchers studied experimental data from the Kuznetsk mining region and compiled graphs of the velocity distribution of modern geodynamic movements of observation points. As a result, zones of concentration of deformations of the earth’s surface have been established, which is an indicator of the negative consequences of subsoil exploitation in the process of extraction, processing and disposal of production waste.

“When analyzing the time series obtained, the following conclusions were reached: no evidence of preparation for a seismic event was found; The points are “dispersed” in latitude, most likely due to the predominantly submerged impact of major tectonic disturbances.” – added the ministry.
