In the Spanish capital, an unknown person attacked the Serbian ambassador as he was walking down the street talking on the phone in Serbian.
Oku.AzAccording to information cited by “N1”, the incident took place on the street where the diplomat lives.
According to witnesses, the man approached Sharats, who was speaking on the phone in Serbian, and asked him if he was from Serbia, then kicked him in the back and ran away. According to the man’s statement, he is believed to be of Albanian origin.
Several witnesses tried to catch the attacker but were unsuccessful.
Police have begun investigating the incident.
Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric condemned the incident.
“I strongly condemn the physical attack against Ambassador Sharats in the centre of Madrid. We demand that all authorities thoroughly investigate this shameful incident and the act of violence against the highest diplomatic representative of our country and bring the perpetrator to justice,” he said.
The ambassador is reportedly in good condition following the attack.
