Serbian professor: “France used excessive force against protesters in New Caledonia”

Serbian professor Tijana Shurlan, a member of the Human Rights Committee, criticized France for its human rights situation.

According to “Report”, speaking within the framework of the 142nd session of the Human Rights Committee, the professor asked the representatives of France about the injuries suffered as a result of the excessive use of force against protesters during the riots that began in New Caledonia . in May 2024:

“Timely and accurate information on completed disciplinary and criminal proceedings, judicial decisions, charges and sanctions imposed on law enforcement officers who abuse their powers would be essential to restoring confidence in the system.”

He noted that there are obstacles to the full implementation of the new right of appeal, which prevents it from giving positive results:

“There is still concern about overcrowding and inhumane detention conditions in prisons, both in France and abroad. In 2021, detention conditions were described as inhuman. We would therefore like to know how the State communicates information about the prisoners”.
