At least five people died Tuesday, September 3, after an attempt to clandestinely cross the English Channel to England, according to French authorities, and Agence France-Presse correspondents saw at least six body bags.
Numerous rescue and safety teams have been deployed near the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer. According to the maritime prefecture, a rescue operation is underway for around fifty victims, some of whom need treatment, and medical teams have been sent to the ships deployed.
Ten people recovered by emergency services off the coast of Wimereux (Pas-de-Calais) are in “absolute emergency”The prefecture told Reuters. The resigning Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, as well as the prefect of Pas-de-Calais are expected to arrive at the scene in the next few hours, according to France 3, which reported shortly before that a dozen castaways were “in cardiorespiratory arrest”.
