Shock at the start of the San Antolín de Palencia fairs. A fight, accompanied by gunshots, caused panic shortly before midnight at the city’s fairgrounds, a few hours after the athlete Marta García, herald of the popular festivities, gave the proclamation. As a result of the event, several people were injured, three slightly crushed and two wounded by gunshots.
It was around 11:50 pm when a call was received on 091 regarding a possible accident at the exhibition centre. Several passenger cars were involved and the local police transported an injured person to the health centre.
As detailed by the government subdelegation in Palencia, later, at the Río Carrión hospital in the capital, another altercation was reported between several relatives of the possible aggressor and the injured. There, the suitors were separated.
The origin of the event appears to be a fight involving street vendors and people of the gypsy ethnic group. At the exhibition center, the Citizen Security and Judicial and Scientific Police protocol intervened and activated. The troops deployed on site cordoned off the area, protected the remains and recovered several gun shell casings.
At present, five people are known to have been injured as a result of the incident. Three of them are minors and are no longer in hospital; one with a gunshot wound (not life-threatening), who was apparently the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident and is being held in hospital; and a second gunshot wounded person of a gypsy ethnicity who is also out of danger.
According to sources from the Sub-delegation, the investigation at the scene of the event really began on Thursday morning, because the rain and “lack of light” had hampered the start of the proceedings beforehand. The event is being prosecuted.
