“She is a woman of conviction”

The Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador he distanced himself this Friday the exclusion of the King of Spain, Felipe VIduring the inauguration of the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaumwho insisted that ““Forgiveness magnifies the nations.”as they begin their final joint tour in the state of Sonora, in northwest Mexico.

López Obrador affirmed that the decision not to invite Felipe VI was taken by his successor, whom he supported once again, during his last visit to the Yaqui people, where they supervised the work of the “Justice Plan for indigenous peoples”, that its administration remains unfinished and will have to continue under the Sheinbaum government.

“I remember that when he asked me about it (not inviting the King of Spain), I told him that I did not consider this necessary. »assured López Obrador.

“But she, contrary to what our adversaries think, She is a woman with convictions and argumentsor that they were asked at the time to apologize to the European invaders, to the Spanish, for the atrocities committed during the conquest and during three centuries of colonial rule,” he added.

The president, whose term ends on September 30, pointed out that, in his memoirs, Hernán Cortés recognized that to subjugate indigenous peoples, he caused rivers of blood to flow.

Before the invasion, our people were free, there was no slavery. Cortés himself wrote this and there is also evidence that there was a lot of repression. I remember a passage from a letter from Hernán Cortés in which he refers to a repression in Yecapixtla, Morelos, where he himself says that it took a long time after this massacre for the river to be dyed red,” he mentioned.

Sheinbaum, who takes office on October 1, recalled that the “Justice Plan for the Yaqui People” It began with an apology from the Mexican state to indigenous peoples, which meant recognizing the atrocities of past governments who wanted to eradicate indigenous peoples to confiscate their territories and natural wealth.

“This forgiveness, and I tell you now because it is a story and it is important that you hear it all over the world, forgiveness makes people great, forgiveness makes nations great , forgiveness makes people great,” Sheinbaum said.

“It means recognizing and to recognize means “never again”, it means not to forgetand we do not forget what happened to their ancestors, to the Yaqui people, but we will not forget the Justice Plan either,” continued the president-elect, who will become the first female president in North America.

After the non-invitation of King Felipe VI, the Spanish government decided not to participate in the ceremony of transfer of presidential power from Andrés Manuel López Obrador to Sheinbaum on October 1, in a new diplomatic disagreement between the European country and the Mexico during the presidential term which is now ending.
