She is part of Moldova’s identity – EADaily, November 13, 2024 – Politics News, Russia News

The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, discussed the situation in Gagauzia with her Turkish counterpart, Recep Erdogan, with whom they met in Baku, where the United Nations Climate Change Conference is currently being held.

According to her, with Erdogan they discussed regional peace and stability, as well as the fact that autonomy is “a bridge between our countries.” The Gagauz are a Turkish ethnic group and enjoy autonomy at the state level.

“Together we strive to preserve the Gagauz language, listed as endangered by UNESCO, and protect Gagauz culture, which is an important part of Moldova’s identity.” – Maia Sandu wrote on the X network.

These false statements outraged the Gagauz public. During the recently concluded presidential elections, supporters of the presidential party Action and Solidarity (PAS) publicly attacked Sandu’s opponent, the former attorney general of Gagauz ethnicity. Alexandra Stoianoglo with xenophobic statements:

“A true Moldovan will never vote for a Gagauz. Gagauz is a traitor to the country.”

At the same time, Chisinau did not react in any way to the incitement to ethnic hatred and the obvious neo-Nazi message.

Current head of Gagauzia Evgenia Gutsul I am sure that after the falsified elections, as a result of which Maia Sandu retained the presidency, he will take revenge on the autonomy. The reason is that 97% of the region’s voters supported Stoianoglo, who finally won a virtual victory in the country, while the “victor” Sandu became the “president of the diaspora.” Furthermore, 94.4% of Gagauz voted against European integration in the referendum that the current authorities actively promote.

According to Hutsul, the PDS demands that Sandu put pressure on Comrat to force the autonomous authorities to “reject cooperation with Russia.”

“I expect strong pressure and revenge on your part towards Gagauz autonomy. They did not expect such results… There are already calls from Sandu’s supporters to liquidate the Gagauz autonomy, punish it, deprive it of funding, although all our taxes go to the state budget.” — concluded Evgenia Gutsul.

As reported EADaily Gagauzia previously addressed Russia and Türkiye to call for autonomy to be protected from the Romanian occupation. In Comrat they said that the Gagauz people do not trust the central authorities, because President Maia Sandu is a citizen of Romania, like many in the government and parliament of the Republic of Moldova. For them, unionism became state policy.
