Sheinbaum insists on distancing himself from Spain and Felipe VI calls for “unity” in the face of “divergences”

The new Mexican government of Claudia Sheinbaum insisted, invoking its Constitution, to mark its distance from its Spanish past and looks at the diplomatic crisis. “Forever, free and independent from the Spanish government“, read the Mexican president in her oath of office from the Constitution. Among the insults to the monarchy, King Felipe VI launched a message of “unit“Ibero-American, recognizing that in their relationship of trust there can also be some”discrepancies.”

“Our relationship is so deep that it allows us to speak frankly of our possible differences”, he underlined during the meeting of the Academies of History in which 14 countries participate. Likewise, he called for maintaining the forms so that the differences are “always based on respect based on friendship.”

On the Sheinbaum executive side, they insist that the head of state apologize for the atrocities of the Conquest. ““We need to reconsider” underlined in reference to the letter sent to the king, although he assures that the bilateral relationship is good.

For his part, the highest representative of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, exonerated Felipe VI of any responsibility by responding to this letter in which Mexico apologized to the crown for the Conquest.

“I was Minister of Foreign Affairs when the famous letter arrived. If there is anyone who is responsible for the fact that we did not respond to him, He is not the king of Spain. Foreign policy is made by the government,” Borrell said. Despite diplomatic efforts to quell the controversy, Sheinbaum insists on colonial confrontation as the cornerstone of relations with Spain.
