Sixty specialists in biomechanics meet at UPNA to present the latest medical advances thanks to this discipline

The Public University of Navarra (UPNA) hosts the XIII Congress of the Spanish Chapter of the European Society of Biomechanicswhich brings together between yesterday Monday October 28 and Tuesday October 29 around sixty professionals, researchers and teachers from Spanish universities.

This scientific event is dedicated to biomechanics, a discipline that approaches the study of biology and medicine through the laws of mechanics with the goal of improving medical diagnosis and treatmentand understand the physiology and evolution of certain pathologies. It counts on the participation of two Italian and French researchers, world leaders in their field, who give guest lectures.

“Biomechanics allows, among other aspects, the development of new medical devices and materials for them and the study of the behavior of biological tissues and the cells that constitute them —describes Mauro Malvè, member of the congress organizing committee, professor in the Department of Engineering and researcher at the INAMAT2 Institute of UPNA. Its application in medicine ranges from the improvement of surgical techniques and the study of diseases and pathologies to the design of more efficient and more comfortable prostheses, including the functioning of cell motility.

Furthermore, biomechanics are “crucial in the physical rehabilitationas it facilitates the development of personalized exercise programs that optimize recovery and prevent future injuries. Likewise, “it contributes to progress in sports medicine, since it helps athletes improve their performance and reduce the risk of injury,” according to this researcher.

“In summary, biomechanics not only enriches the understanding of how the human body functions, but also stimulates innovations that improve quality of life and medical outcomes. With the arrival of computers in the last four decades and, today, with artificial intelligence, biomechanics has immense potential for modern medicine,” predicts Mauro Malvè.

Collaboration between universities, health sector and businesses

The congress aims to present the lines of work of the different Spanish groups specialized in biomechanics, foster collaboration between the university, the clinical field and the business sector and publicize scientific research in this field.

It includes 45 oral presentations, divided into nine sessions, in addition to two plenary conferences given by international experts. SO, Francesco Migliavaccaprofessor at the Polytechnic of Milan, yesterday discussed the latest research on medical devices such as cardiovascular stents (prostheses) and heart valves.

These lines of research have made it a world reference and earned it recognition such as Gold Medal of the Italian Republic. For his part, Abdul Barakat, professor at the École Polytechnique de Paris, presented today the latest advances in mechanobiology.

The congress is sponsored by the European Society of Biomechanics, the scientific publications publisher Frontiers and the Saza company. Collaborating Rhinoceros (three-dimensional modeling software), the railway company Renfe, Navarrabiomed (biomedical research center of the Government of Navarra and the UPNA), ADItech (coordinator of the Navarrese R&D&I system) and the Pamplona City Hall.

He Spanish Chapter of the European Society of Biomechanics was born in 2011 as the Spanish representation of the European Society of Biomechanics with the aim of bringing together professionals and researchers of this science to strengthen their collaboration and promote the dissemination of scientific research in this area.
