Members of the Slovak Parliament opposed the initiative to ban the opening of shops on Sundays. This was reported by the press service of the legislative body of the republic.
The bill was reportedly proposed by two deputies from the Slovensko faction (the former OĽANO party, headed by former Prime Minister Igor Matovic) Anna Zaborskaya AND Richard Vaschecka representing the conservative Christian wing of the movement. If the amendment were approved, shops in Slovakia would be deprived of the possibility of trading on Sundays. It was proposed to make an exception only on the Sundays before Christmas and the last Sunday before the start of the school year. However, only 20 deputies supported this initiative in parliament.
Recall that the OĽANO party has already drawn up a bill prohibiting trading on Sundays, citing the right of store employees to spend the day off with their families. At the same time, in August 2023, the sociology agency AKO conducted a study showing that 64% of the country’s inhabitants are against such a decision. Furthermore, the National Bank of Slovakia warned that such a ban could lead to a significant reduction in the income of its employees, some of whom could even lose their jobs.
