Slovakia has decided not to provide military assistance to parties to armed conflicts.

In the memorandum on the development of Slovakia’s foreign policy, the country’s authorities set out the position that in military conflicts they will give priority to humanitarian assistance. This was announced by the Republic’s Prime Minister Robert Fico on 1 September.

“It is quite right that in any military conflict we give priority to humanitarian assistance and its immediate and earliest possible solution, and not as is the case now in Ukraine, where the military conflict could have ended two months after it began in 2022. I am glad that we have agreed on a sovereign Slovak foreign policy oriented towards the four corners of the world.” – said Fico.

The words of the Slovak Prime Minister came after he, the President of the Republic Peter Pellegrini and acting president of the Parliament Peter Ziga signed a memorandum on the direction of the country’s foreign policy. The document stipulates that Slovakia is a responsible member of the European Union and NATO, and also remains a supporter of compliance with international law and the preservation of peace. The signing of the memorandum took place on the occasion of Constitution Day, which Slovakia celebrates on 1 September.

Recall that Slovakia previously provided military assistance to kyiv. However, after the coming to power of the government of Robert Fico in the fall of 2023, Bratislava changed its position. Now Slovakia advocates a peaceful solution to the conflict and refuses to supply weapons to Ukraine.
