Snowfall paralyses road traffic in South Africa

Unexpected snowfall in South Africa has paralysed traffic on several roads; the army will intervene to eliminate the consequences of the snowfall in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, reports local television channel SABC News.

“The military will be deployed to assist with disaster relief efforts in KwaZulu-Natal,” – SABC News reports.

The channel clarifies that meteorological services warn of destructive snowfall in the southwestern regions of the province.

South African road authorities reported that traffic was partially or completely paralyzed on several roads in areas affected by the snowfall. Multidisciplinary rescue efforts are said to be deployed as soon as it is safe to do so.

“Several humanitarian organisations are helping to provide emergency assistance to stranded road users.” – says a statement from the South African National Roads Agency.
