Socialist Mayor Juan A. Sagredo ignores PSOE for the second time to pray in Valencia Cathedral

Just a year ago, during the celebration of October 9the socialist mayor Juan Antonio Sagredo was warned at the door of the Valencia Cathedral.

The PSOE comrades reminded him at that time that they would not enter the seo during the civic procession of the Valencian Community Day in Valencia, that they would stay outside in protest. But the senator followed the path of faith.

The Socialists of Valencia, then led by current MEP Sandra Gómez, were against the Real Senyera enter the temple, but Sagredo disagrees. And he made it known. “I participate in masses, I receive communion, I have confessed“, he replied when asked about this by EL ESPAÑOL.

A year later, this Wednesday, October 9, the senator and mayor of Paterna, a city in the metropolitan area of Valencia, was no longer content with entering and participating in the religious celebration. He also took the photo inside and shared it on his social media, in case his colleagues hadn’t noticed.

Sagredo is once again the only socialist among the dozens of representatives of the PP and Vox, distributed around him.

This year, the PSOE, with its new municipal spokesperson Borja Sanjuánmaintained the same slogan and none of its representatives at Valencia City Hall entered the cathedral.

Controversial

The spokesperson for Compromís at Valencia City Hall, Papi Robleswas this year the standard bearer carried by the Royal Senyera during the celebrations celebrated in the capital.

The mayor Maria José Catalá announced the decision, in addition to recalling that the stop would be made at the Te Deum of the Cathedral, a religious act that Compromís does not share and that the former mayor Joan Ribó repressed during his eight years at the head of the municipality. The PP recovered it after winning the last elections.

As expected, Papi Robles did not enter the cathedral and Catalá carried the Senyera into the temple.

“The Senyera is transferred by the mayor to a councilor, in this case, Papi Robles. The moment this councilor leaves the Senyera, it returns to the hands of the mayor,” he said after confirming the announcement.

The mayor explained that Compromís is the second most important group in Valencia City Hall and that they have always taken turns carrying the Senyera from the oldest to the youngest, so “I always knew that it was the Tower of Compromise”.

Ribó suspended this ruling after winning the 2015 municipal elections and opened a front with the Archbishopric of Valencia.

The former mayor informed the then Cardinal Archbishop of Valencia, Antonio Canizareswho was able to maintain the Te Deum on the occasion of the celebration of October 9, but reported that the Royal Senyera would no longer enter the Cathedral because it was necessary”separate things of the Church from things of the Stateand the municipality is the State.”

What is the Te Deum

The term tedeum comes from the Latin expression Te Deum, which translates to “yours, God”.

“The solemn Te Deum is celebrated every October 9 at commemoration of the conversion to Christianity of the Kingdom of Valencia“, the same day in the year 1238, after the entry of James I into the city, when the cathedral was dedicated and consecrated to the Assumption of Mary”, recalled the archdiocese in a press release.

The singers of the Cathedral Choir, under the direction of Luis Garridothey performed this anthem early in the morning

“In the case of the city of Valencia, it is one of the first hymns of thanksgiving composed in Valencian. The words sung, which are a translation of the original text written in Latin, were produced by the Jesuit Joan Costa and the Canon of the Cathedral José Almiñana“, reported the archdiocese.
