Mother tongue, mathematics, literature, history and other important subjects are taught in secondary schools in order to teach students the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare them for life. One of them is biology. Unfortunately, several teachers do not convey some biology-related lessons to students. They are mostly lessons related to human anatomy and the reproductive system. But what is the reason for this?
Speaking to Modern.az on the topic, Gunay Akbarova, secretary of the Public Council under the Ministry of Science and Education, said that there may be several reasons why teachers do not teach sex lessons in secondary schools:
“First of all, there is a cultural and social pressure factor. Conservative values in society and taboos on sexual topics are the reasons that make it difficult for teachers to approve these classes. This is especially evident in the regions.”
According to G. Akbarova, gender equality and gender issues in subjects taught in schools are not sufficiently reflected in the curriculum:
“The lack of sufficient knowledge of teachers about gender equality and gender issues, as well as the lack of a more correct approach to the topic, also leads to these lessons not being taught. Sometimes parents react negatively to the lessons related to gender, making it difficult “It’s difficult for teachers to talk about that topic. “These factors make it difficult to correctly clarify and understand gender equality.”
