Spain, elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the period 2025-2027

Spain was elected a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the period 2025-2027. According to sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the election was communicated to the Government this Wednesday and was carried out by a large majority of the General Assembly. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Jose Manuel Albares emphasizes that this is “a sample of the weight and importance that the voice of Spain has acquired in the world.”

For Foreign Affairs, the election of Spain to occupy this “weighty position” in the multilateral sphere. Albares congratulated himself in a video published on his social networks, in which he indicated that Spain’s commitment to the United Nations is “tolerance and peace”which the government will insist is “consistent across the world”. That’s to say, it’s the same in Ukraine as in Gaza. And from this seat, he will work “for all rights, political, economic, social and cultural”.

According to the sources cited, the Spanish government’s objective is to “also protect human rights defenders.” And this includes, they explain, the equality of genderthe rights of disabled “and the right to environment“, which constitute the fundamental lines of the foreign policy of the government of Pedro Sanchez.
