Consuming coffee, tea, yogurt, citrus fruits, and sugary soft drinks on an empty stomach can cause problems with digestion and blood sugar control.
Oku.AzAccording to the “Daily Mail”, nutritionist Robin Chutkan from Georgetown University Hospital and gastroenterologist Michael Shopis from New York spoke about it.
According to experts, caffeine can stimulate the secretion of stomach acid, which can cause symptoms such as heartburn, nausea, cough, bad breath, and abdominal bloating. Additionally, the lower esophageal sphincter can dilate and stomach acid can back up into the esophagus, causing acid reflux. These effects can occur both on an empty stomach and when it is full, but unpleasant sensations are more pronounced on an empty stomach.
Doctors added that it is necessary to have a snack before drinking black tea, which traditionally contains more caffeine than other types. Chamomile, hibiscus and mint teas can be drunk without fear.
It is not recommended to drink caffeinated drinks on an empty stomach, as well as sweet and carbonated drinks. Carbon dioxide can build up in the stomach, putting pressure on it and causing bloating. In addition, a sudden intake of sugar from food can cause a sharp increase in blood glucose levels, the decrease in which is usually accompanied by a loss of strength.
Gastroenterologist Shopis noted that some people experience difficulty digesting dairy products on an empty stomach. According to the doctor, excess lactic acid in yogurt can irritate the gastrointestinal tract and destroy part of the probiotics (beneficial bacteria) contained in the product.
Another product that experts do not recommend consuming as a first meal are citrus fruits and their juices. They note that citric acid, which is a popular breakfast ingredient, can damage the lining of the intestine.
