Stoianoglo overtakes Sandu in Moldovan presidential elections in Transnistria

Former Attorney General Alexander Stoianoglo is the leader in the Moldovan presidential elections in Transnistria; He defeated Maia Sandu, who is running for a second term, by 10 percentage points, the Central Electoral Commission reports.

In Transnistria, at 00:35 (coinciding with Moscow time), 100% of the polling station records had been processed, Stoyanoglo obtained 35.41% of the votes, Sandu – 25.21%.

At the same time, 70% of Transnistrian residents voted against Moldova’s accession to the European Union, according to data from the Central Electoral Commission of Moldova after processing 90% of the protocols in the region. Overall, in Moldova, 54.47% of citizens voted against EU accession and 45.53% voted for it, according to data from the recount of 86.9% of the votes.

Presidential elections were held in Moldova on Sunday and the head of the republic was elected for a four-year term. Also that day, a referendum was held in which citizens had to answer the question: “Do you support changing the constitution so that the Republic of Moldova joins the European Union?” Both events were considered valid, as participation in each of them exceeded the required limit of 33.3%. Work on the country’s sites ended at 9:00 p.m.

If none of the candidates manages to obtain more than 50% of the votes in the first round, the second round will take place on November 3.
