Stoltenberg leaves NATO: who will replace him?

Former Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg has been serving as NATO Secretary General since 2014. He will be succeeded in this role by Mark Rutte, former Prime Minister of the Netherlands.

Politico reports this.

At NATO, he succeeded Anders Rasmussen and became the first Norwegian to head the alliance. As NATO chief, Stoltenberg championed the need to strengthen the alliance’s military power, including nuclear weapons.

After stepping down as Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO), Stoltenberg will not be left unemployed. It is already known that he will be the chairman of the Munich Security Conference. It is true that he will not take up this position until after the next congress, scheduled for February 2025. The current head of the Munich Security Forum, Christoph Geusgen, did not take up this position until 2022. And Wolfgang Ischinger, chairman of the board of the Munich Security Conference Foundation, has held this position for many years and will continue to do so even after Stoltenberg joins the organisation.

Jens Stoltenberg’s powers as NATO Secretary General were known to have ended on 30 September 2022, but in March 2022, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, his powers were extended twice.

Rutte announced his intention to run for the post of NATO Secretary General in place of Stoltenberg in October 2023, and in February 2024 he received the support of the governments of the United States, Great Britain, Germany and France. Over the following months he managed to overcome opposition from Turkey, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania. At that time, his last competitor, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, dropped out of the race for the post of Secretary General. And on June 26, the North Atlantic Council appointed Rutte as NATO Secretary General.

Recall that Cursor wrote that Russian dictator Putin was invited by Brazilian authorities to a G2 meeting, so the question arises whether he will be arrested there or whether they will violate international law.
