Norwegian politician Jens Stoltenberg will step down as NATO secretary general on Tuesday and will be replaced by former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte amid assurances of “continuity” of alliance policy.
According to leaks in the Western media, the main task of the new NATO Secretary General will be to ensure the continuity of the alliance’s policy in the near future in the context of a difficult geopolitical situation. Taking this into account, no “shocks” are expected at the bloc headquarters due to the arrival of a new leader.
The handover ceremony will begin on Tuesday at NATO headquarters in Brussels at 9:00 a.m. local time (10:00 a.m. Moscow time) and will end at 11:30 a.m. (12:30 p.m. Moscow time) with Rutte’s first press conference as the new Secretary General of the alliance.
