We will immerse ourselves in the Tejera Negra, an unmissable place. As the Castilla-La Mancha Tourism website tells us: “Preserved in an exceptional microclimate and integrated into the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara Natural Park, we find one of the southernmost beech forests in Europe. The Lillas and Zarzas rivers, which have their source at the foot of the La Buitrera peak, feed it. The forest extends into two valleys flanked by high, sharp rocky ridges. The beech forest, its greatest attraction, gives off a magical atmosphere due to its colors, the moss on its floors and its silences. In addition, melojo oaks, Scots pines, yews, hollies, rowan trees and birches grow. The much-loved Boletus Edulis grows on its soil in autumn and its skies are crossed by the golden eagle, roe deer, foxes and wild boars. In 2017, along with other beech forests in Spain and Europe, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as an extension of the primeval beech forests of the Carpathians and other regions of Europe.

Cantalojas is the town we will fall in love with this fall and it is presented to us: “Located 158 kilometers from Guadalajara, it is accessed by the A-2, towards Zaragoza, taking exit 104 to take the CM-1101, towards Sigüenza, and after leaving the Ciudad del Doncel, you take the CM-110, although then you have to travel a short stretch of the CM-101, but finally you take the CM-110 again, and after leaving Atienza, you have to turn off take the GU-213 and then, in Galve de Sorbe, take the GU-163 and finally the GU-146 to Cantalojas. Cantalojas is located on the southern slope of the Sierra de Ayllón, between beautiful panoramic views of pastures and forests. A few meters from the city, the waters of the Lillas River flow through impressive meadows where mushrooms abound, covered with heather, in a beautiful natural environment. On its territory is one of the great jewels of Guadalajara’s biodiversity, the Hayedo de la Tejera Negra, which occupies an area of 1,641 hectares, at the eastern end of the central system, forming part of the Ayllón massif. The microclimate of this natural space has allowed the conservation of an extraordinary beech forest massif, one of the southernmost in Europe, with specimens over 300 years old. It is worth witnessing the chromatic spectacle that its unique and grandiose forest wealth produces in autumn, because in addition to beeches, you can find other species such as holly, yew (which gives its name to this natural space), birch, oaks and pines. The Hayedo de Tejera Negra is currently integrated into the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara Natural Park, being classified as a Special Protection Area. As a monumental resource, the parish church of San Julián stands out, a beautiful 17th-century building with a certain Romanesque touch. The magnitude of its festive events is personalized by its famous Livestock Fair, which takes place every October 12 and is one of the oldest livestock events in Guadalajara. It has been declared a festival of provincial tourist interest and is an essential event every year for many livestock farmers from many Spanish provinces.
