At first, Maya did not consider this with breastfeeding. Her transition has just begun when Leo was born. What does your own body produce milk? Impossible, she thought.
Maya is a trance and mother. He only wants the names to be called, the names of family members – pseudonyms. With her close friend Netta, Maya decided to gather the child together. In, the then partner of Maya, also wanted to participate in raising children. This is how Maya tells this by phone. Leo gave birth to a good. Maya, an engineer -a programmer and a passionate computer player, it became advisable that she could feed Leo only with a bottle. But can only breast women really can?
On Friday the afternoon of March, Jodjannek Van Emesfort exchanged a coat of her doctor for jeans and a purple sweater. Mina, her small dotted dog, wants to constantly stroke when the Zoom phone. “Theoretically, every human body has the ability to produce milk,” Jojanneke Van Amesfoort explains on a video call on Friday in March. She is currently training specialized training as a gynecologist.
Targeted stimulation of milk formation without pregnancy is called “induced lactation.” Amesfoort is one of the first to study whether trans -moms can breastfeed. Scientific studies are mainly dealing with induction of lactation in women in the CIS, that is, all those who are identified with the female sex assigned to them at birth.

An example from Amsterdam
In the Amsterdam Center for competence in gender dysphoria, Van Emesfort began to explore this topic. In 2020, Trans -woman contacted the object. She wanted to breastfeed the baby with whom her partner was pregnant with her milk. At that time, the doctors did not have experience with induced lactation, at that time there was one example of another trans -auditing woman. The team was based on this, where Van Eimsfort was responsible.
Each human body can theoretically produce milk

To stimulate milk production, doctors imitated hormonal changes in pregnancy. During this, the body is exhausted by estrogen and progesterone and, thus, prepares the chest for breastfeeding. After birth, their mirror falls, and another hormone, prolactin, launches the formation of milk.
The consumption of estrogen and progesterone plays pregnancy for the body. There is also a medicine that stimulates the formation of milk, for example, domperidone. Two or four weeks before the birth of a child, women reduce hormonal therapy or push them away to imitate the fall of the hormone after birth. In addition, pumping and stimulation of the nipples support milk formation.
Existing scientific studies show that induced breastfeeding for trans -gaps is mainly possible. How often it works, there are no reliable figures, because so few studies have been conducted so far. Knowledge from strange communities is more extensive. During breastfeeding Trans Women, the experience report also applies to induced lactation, which was developed by the mother of Lenor Goldfarb and pediatrician Jack Newman. At least, from one scientific thematic study it is known that the composition of milk of a trance from the point of view of the content of fat, proteins and calories is comparable to milk women.
7 milliliters of milk per day
In early June 2020, almost four months after her partner began pregnancy, the future mother began treatment of hormonal treatment. In the middle of the auto, her breasts formed the first drops of liquid. From mid -October, she swayed every few hours to stimulate production. The child was born in early November. At this moment, she increased the formation of milk to a maximum of 7 milliliters per day, but many newborn drink about 20 milliliters for food. The creation of a sufficient amount of milk for the baby is much easier for a completely mature chest than for what is just being created, Van Aimsfoort explains.
The efforts of induced lactation were too large for a young family. Two weeks later, the mother finished breastfeeding. The solution was “tough, but correct”, quoted by van of the patient of the patient. Van EMESOFORT was not allowed to establish direct contacts for this text for medical ethical reasons.
Van Emescfort hopes that, regardless of gender identity and pregnancy, breastfeeding will be easier to consider all those who want “lesbian partners, foster parents, unpretentious parents, transmission”.
When Maya, her partner in and somoter, expected her child at that time, did not yet know that transformers could also breastfeed. But they knew that they were experiencing reports from induced lactation in women in the CIS. Thus, Ina decided to try breastfeeding without preliminary pregnancy, while Maya adapted to the bottle.
Access to drugs has become easier
In fact, induced lactation works CIS and Trans Women in accordance with the same principle. This is simple to get estrogen and progesterone, there are many common contraceptives. But the couple failed from the purchase of Domperidon. The drug is traditionally used for nausea, but has side effects. Van Amesfoort recommends that you have a doctor accompanied by a doctor when taking drugs that stimulate milk. “We knew that there were doctors of general practice who prescribe overdose,” Maya recalls, “but we did not have such a relationship with our practices.”
At the same time, access to the necessary resources for breastfeeding has become easier, says Lisel Burish. As a barrel, Burish, in particular, accompanies rainbow families after birth and continues the midwife and breastfeeding consultants to cause lactation. According to Burish, the pandemic has changed a lot, also for the positive. For example, doctors and midwives can advise Domperidon Online in federal states or even prescribe it. In addition, now there are more informed midwives.
Burish, at the same time, the artist, wrote a book about breastfeeding, said “Quir -Car”. “Breastfeeding is a lot of work for calling and childbirth,” says Burish. Very few were managed after six months recommended by the World Health Organization. The reason for this is loneliness, overwhelming and stress after birth. According to studies, up to 20 percent of childbirth suffer from depression in the first few months after birth.
“In social terms, a childbearing person is attributed to the greatest responsibility and fault, if something does not work with the newborn,” says Burish. In addition, there is too much pressure that your own body should make – from the incorrectly understood idea of naturalness. Hetero parents could learn a lot from strange families, according to Burish, less responsibility is often unloaded for one breastfeeding, because breastfeeding and equivalent parenthood are much no longer amenable to the issue for several. Burisch wants the breastfeeding of unreasonable parents to not be considered “as an individual project of passion”, but rather receives the same support as the child.
“Breastfeeding as an argument for the distribution of care for care unilaterally”
Maya saw in the creeping group of Leo how family life looks in many hetero families. There she only met her mothers, for whom several hours without a child were unthinkable. “Breastfeeding is often used as an argument for the distribution of care work unilaterally,” she says. Okay, In and Maya absolutely wanted to avoid this. For them, this included not everything to live together. Netta remained in their common apartment, Maya and Ina looked for an apartment nearby.
After the first few weeks, they started a new everyday life in an alternating model. Good pumped so that Leo could also drink in the breast milk of MAYA and Ina. In the end, Leo did not pull the milk out of the bottle, Maya and the days with a diet of breast nutrition. From a bag filled with milk, a thin hose leads to a chest, the end of which is attached to the nipple. The child sucks in a nipple and a hose at the same time.
Maya clamped the hose on her finger: “I was still at the very beginning of my transition, and without any remarkable curvature of the chest, it is difficult to pester the child.” The flow of milk through the hose was as slow as through the chest. “The child has something to suck, feel physical intimacy and may calm down, like on his chest,” says Maya. “In the other way, do you give bottles or suck your finger, and you hug.”
From the solution of the finger, her gaze on the breastfeeding changed. “It was very fixed in my head that breastfeeding should occur on my chest – but why?
