One of the biggest concerns of students today is accommodation. We all know the rental prices of houses in the capital. Students who do not have the financial means to rent an apartment go to their university residences. But do all universities located in Baku have dormitories? Under what conditions are dormitories provided to students?
Lent.az has conducted research on student residences at universities.
In response to our question, Baku State University said that the BSU “Student House”, which meets modern standards, has all the conditions:
“Laundry, internet, reading room, sports field, medical center, 24-hour security cameras, etc. The “student house” is located 1-2 minutes from the university. Mainly children of martyrs, veterans, children of those who lost their parents, children from socially vulnerable groups, etc. The monthly rate is 75 manats per person.
According to information provided by the Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction (AzMIU), the five-building complex intended for student housing cannot serve students at its full capacity at present:
“The reason for this is that our citizens, who were displaced from their native villages during the First Karabakh War in the 1990s, settled in the dormitories of AzMIU, as well as in other universities. 4 buildings of the complex are already operational For many years there has only been one building available to students, which also has 450 places. It can accommodate about 100 students.
The information mentions that all conditions have been created for students in the building:
“Student interest in our residence is very high. The monthly payment of 50 AZN is quite competitive compared to the prices of residences at other universities. This amount is used to cover the running costs of the residence, Internet and Laundry services for students However, approximately 20-25% of students families of martyrs and veterans, war veterans and those who belong to a special vulnerable group, who are exempt from payment.
AzMIU has also drawn attention to a nuance that a student is not expelled from the dormitory if he cannot pay:
“In such a case, the student submits an application to the rector and his fees are temporarily paid through the university’s public organizations.”
According to information provided by the Azerbaijan State University of Industry and Petroleum (ASUI), the educational institution has a dormitory for 320 people:
“Both local and foreign students stay in the residence. One room can accommodate 2 or 3 people. When 2 people stay, they pay 50 manats each, and when 3 people stay, they pay 34 manats each. Negotiations on the construction of a The new construction of our dormitory is being carried out, which is in a fair state of conservation.
The Azerbaijan State University of Economics (UNEC) noted that the university has five dormitories:
“The students cannot use the dormitories because internally displaced people live there. After their relocation, the dormitories will be renovated and can be used by the students.”
Currently, four dormitories operate at Azerbaijan Medical University, while dormitory number 3 has been suspended for major repairs:
“The total capacity of the dormitories is about 1,000 people. Our female students who are citizens of Azerbaijan live in dormitories No. 1 and 2, our male students who are citizens of Azerbaijan live in dormitory No. 6, and foreign students live in dormitories No. 5. Every year, on the occasion of the beginning of the academic year, from September 1 until residence. We also want to point out that 100% of our students are citizens. Azerbaijanis. Since 2013, the university transfers a certain amount of money for living in the dormitory, depending on the dormitory and the capacity of the room. The payment is 110 AZN per month for double rooms, 80 AZN for 3-4. people costs 60 AZN.
The statement also states that families of martyrs and students without parental care stay in the dormitory for free:
“Children of veterans and students with disabled parents of group I also receive certain concessions. The university residences are constantly under the supervision of the rector, the University Trade Union Committee and the economic department. As a result, the residences have a reading room, a bathroom and are constantly provided with Internet.” .
Our colleague from the Azerbaijan University of Languages was told that dormitory number 2 of the higher educational institution is intended for girls, can accommodate 205 people, and the cost of the service is 30 manats:
“Boys’ dormitory number 1 is currently closed to students because it houses internally displaced people. However, after the families return to their homeland, the dormitory will be renovated and made available to students.”
