Super Typhoon Yagi hits Southeast Asia, heading after China towards Vietnam

Destructive Super Typhoon Yagi continues to ravage Southeast Asia, having covered Hainan Province in southern China the day before.

According to Xinhua, the city of Wenchang was the hardest hit, where wind speeds reached 245 kilometers per hour. Its storms easily blew away parked cars, toppled trees and shattered the windows of balconies of high-rise residential buildings.

Due to the severity of the disaster, Chinese authorities had to evacuate 420,000 inhabitants. Transport links in the region are limited, with trains, ships and airports suspended. Educational institutions in the province are closed.

The typhoon has so far affected one million people, with the neighbouring province of Guangdong partially affected. Hundreds of flights have been cancelled at Hong Kong airport.

The typhoon has been assigned level 17, according to meteorologists, and is heading towards Vietnam, threatening the cities of Haiphong and Thai Binh. Authorities are preparing for a possible evacuation of the population.

Due to the approach of Yaga to Vietnam, a friendly football match between the national teams of Russia and Thailand, which was supposed to take place in Hanoi, has been cancelled. The wind has already picked up in the Vietnamese capital and a strong storm is expected later.

Previously EADaily reported that on the Japanese island of Kyushu, 39 people were injured and one person is missing due to the consequences of Typhoon Shanshan.
